With growing geopolitical instability and volatility, how governments ensure effective diplomacy and justice matters. Investing in our relationships with countries who share our values is vital if we are to strengthen our security at home and abroad. Our foreign policy should focus on the de-escalation of risk, and investment in our soft power, starting with the relief of suffering for those who are survivors of conflict and climate challenges. Strong investment in overseas development plays a crucial role in not just sustaining life, but building future resilience. To follow the United States’ mistaken approach in cutting aid will leave many without the vital support that is absolutely necessary.
Under the last Labour Government we were known for leading the world in our international aid programmes, and set in train the move to 0.7% GDP spent on vital support. To now sacrifice this for greater investment in the UK Arms Trade, already under scrutiny, is the wrong approach to building lasting peace and justice. The UK has a heavy responsibility, and we should rise above partisan engagements to secure peace, not escalate war. I fully recognise the challenges that the situation in Ukraine presents, but we must aid a process of dialogue, as this is the only way that any conflict ultimately reaches its resolve.
